Checklist
Before each ride it is important to do the following
1.Hardware & Structural Integrity (The "Wrench" Check)
Before every ride, and especially after purchase or long storage, verify that all attachments are secure to prevent mechanical failure.
- Handlebars & Stem: Ensure the stem bolts are tightened to the manufacturer’s torque specs. The handlebars should not rotate when pressure is applied, and the front wheel should be perfectly aligned with the stem. Transport Canada: Bicycle Safety
- Axles & Quick-Releases: Confirm that thru-axles are threaded tightly or quick-release levers are clamped firmly toward the rear of the bike to prevent snagging.
- Crank Arms & Pedals: Use a wrench to ensure pedals are tight. Check that the crank arms (the metal bars holding the pedals) do not wiggle or have play.
- Rack & Fender Bolts: Vibrations from e-bike motors can loosen small bolts. Tighten all mounting points for cargo racks, fenders, and bottle cages.
- Kickstand: Ensure the kickstand bolt is tight and the stand retracts fully so it does not strike the ground during turns.
2. The "ABC" Mechanical Basics
- Air: Inflate tires to the PSI range listed on the tire sidewall. Under-inflated tires increase the risk of "pinch flats" and drain the battery faster.
- Brakes: Squeeze levers to ensure they engage firmly. On hydraulic systems, check for oily residue (leaks) at the calipers.
- Chain & Gears: Ensure the chain is lubricated and free of "stiff links." Test shifting through all gears to ensure the chain doesn't jump or fall off.
3. Electrical System & Power
- Battery Seating: Verify the battery is "clicked" into place and locked. A loose battery can vibrate and damage the electrical contact pins.
- Display & Assist: Turn on the system and check for error codes. Ensure the pedal assist (PAS) levels change as expected.
- Cabling: Inspect wires leading to the motor and display. Ensure no cables are pinched in the steering column or rubbing against the tires.
4. Canadian Legal & Safety Gear
- Helmet: Fasten a certified helmet. In Canada, helmets are mandatory for e-bike riders so always wear a certified helmet.
- Audible Signal: Confirm your bell or horn is reachable and loud. This is a legal requirement for riding on public roads.
- Active Lighting: Ensure your white front light and red rear light are functioning. For enhanced safety, use the CAA Bike Safety Guide to review local hand signal requirements.
5. Final "Drop Test"
Lift the bike 5 cm (2 inches) off the ground and let it drop onto its tires. Listen for any loud rattles or loose parts. A well-maintained e-bike should make a solid "thud" without any metallic clanking.
